Blog 19.. Union Sq. Farmers Market

Union Sq. Farmers Market!!

Exploring the Farmers Market in Union Square on a Saturday was crowded and cold! But to my surprise instead of feeling overwhelmed with the amount of people there it was a refreshing. I walked around listening to my i pod and observing what the market had to offer and the type of people who go out of there way and travel to buy food away from home. Such as myself not only was this a project but i also had to prepare a meal for my family by the time i got back home, to present as well as enjoy.

It takes me about 45 Min's to get there, between taking the over crowded 7 train to grand Central and then taking the 4,5, or 6 . The environment in the farmers market was like stepping out of my normal world and into an urban society.  All different cultures where around but mostly white Americans, makes you think twice about living where you are when everything is so much better in other places. Over all it was a nice experience

I saw so many types of fresh grown products, especially vegetables and fruits that smelled extremely fresh. The food might have been more over priced than going to your local grocery store or super market but you can definitely tell that you would be buying better quality food rather than Processed food that can cause so many health issues.

I ended up buying some peaches and apples. They tasted so good!! I also bought some peppers, zucchini, and corn to make a side dish for dinner. You can definitely tell the freshness of the food they were selling at the farmers market! I would go again!!

Blog 18:

In the passage The $2 Camisole: How cheap is ruining our lives by Mary Elizabeth Williams the author explains how super sales for merchandise at low amounts of money end up selling cheap materialed products. Advertisements for cheap products like $2 camisoles and $139 dollar kindle seem to draw attention to buyers, but buying cheap products is costly. Merchandise such as Phones, sunglasses, cabinets do not seem to last long. Throwing bought items with short periods of time become more common as if all products come with an experation date of a couple of months instead of years.

My thesis: I agree with the author

Reason 1: Many sales in stores or even specific sales days due to holidays.
Example: Black friday is the day after after thanks giving the day of the year that has the most sales out of the year. People believe that black friday is meant for people to save but you end up wasting more money at the end of the day on cheap products dont last.

Reason 2:

Ninth Lab/Blog 17: Reflection on Blogging

1. How blogging has helped you improve your writing
Blogging has allowed me to be more aware, having my work for everyone to see becomes more of a pressure to do my best. It also allows me to view my work consistently to improve or correct anything i don't like.

2. What you could have done more or differently?
Everything, I haven't been in school in so long i had forgotten how to structure an essay properly, but this becomes a journey or new beginning to learning. I  had forgotten how to look for the main point and the authors thesis while i was reading, it wasn't as bad, but I happen to think that was the least of my problems, when it came to structuring an essay it was more when i needed to come up with idea to write that essay. Now i know i stick my opinion with things i have read, watched or experienced.

Blog 16: The new Industrial Migrants

I`n the article The New Industrial Migrants (Part 1)  Eric Schlosser explains there are a large amount of immigrants that come from Mexico, Central America, and Southeast Asia that travel to Colorado and land in meatpacking jobs with poor work conditions. According to Eric " The average worker quite or was fired every three months." the meatpacking industry has a 400 percent turnover which allows new hires to fill in the space to the large amount of jobs available. The owners to these type of jobs treat people as if there were disposable, the job requires them to lift heavy animal parts, use sharp knives in order to butcher the meat, use heavy machinery, etc. These type of job can cause injury to the employee's, but unfortunately because these companies insist to save money to make more money "Health insurance is offered to workers after six months on the job; and vacation pay, after a year." Majority of the workers in the beef plant in Greeley cannot speak English which implies that two-thirds of the workers at Greeley are immigrants. These people don't know any better and they choose to work hard to live. I know if at the end of the day i need to eat, and needed to find a place to live I'll work for the $9.25 an hour they offer their workers, simply because its more than minimum wage for another company.

CATW # 5

In the article " How to do One Thing at a Time" by Nancy Jones in Women's health magazine, the author begins to explain that a large amount of evidence shows that our minds process better doing single-tasks rather than doing things simultaneously. A group project proved that students who were asked to spend a certain amount of time doing a music play list, chatting, and write a short essay either as a single tasker or multi-tasker showed that a single-tasker did better.

I agree with this article because multi-tasking can be a losing proposition and/or a great disadvantage to your learning process. It becomes difficult to realize that so many individuals decide to talk or text while driving, knowing that it's a bad idea, so many people do anyways. Many individuals have caused car accidents which caused harm or death to adults and children due to this bad idea. It becomes a question of are we addicted to technology or is it already a force of habit to respond to our phones? A prof at M.I.T. Sherry Turkle mentioned we started to see phones advance more than ever toward the time of 9/11, a time where thousands of people died due to a terrorist attack in NYC. Our society became worried of not knowing where their loved ones were, which caused good parents to buy their children cell phones. Since the time parents allowed young teenagers to have a cell phone, text messages seemed to be more of the source of communication for teens. To these young adults it was less of an aquard silence moment through a phone conversation which allowed short phone conversation become long text conversations. For instance when i text i can have a conversation for hours but if i were to have that exact conversation on the phone it'll be at least half an hour. In another aspect to extensive technology use sometimes our focus is more on one thing rather than the other. Many children get infuriated with the lack of attention they get from their parents, a parent can get on a phone, like a blackberry which is more of a business type phone, and last on it for hours. Children need a lot of physical attention they need to know a parent is physically there to support them, not trapped in a world of technology.

Multi-tasking can cause us to loose our strength in learning. In the article Jones quoted clifford nass " A tremendous amount of evidence shows that the brain does better when it's performing tasks in a sequence rather than all at once."  An experiment at Stanford Brown university proved it was true. Two groups of students were asked to perform three tasks, Music play list, chatting, and writing a short essay, after all is done they were given a memory test. One group was asked to do their tasks as single taskers taking 10 Min's on each project. The other group was told do everything simultaneously taking 30 Min's to do every thing at the same time. According to the article " The single-taskers did significantly better than their multi-tasking peers." In my own experience I cant study and listen to music and watch TV all at once, my full concentration would not be there. There are people who leave everything behind in order to do what they need to do like write a book or a script. In many cases people rent out cabins for a extensive period of time to be able to do there work and have nothing but the clothing they brought with them. It gives them nothing more than time to think and not anytime to think about the world or technology  of any sort. We as individuals need to learn how to balance our lives without our cell phones, websites like facebook, twitter and myspace or any type of technology in general.

Blog 12:

Reading Michael Pollan's advice on how to eat healthier really gives me the opportunity to think twice about what i put into my mouth. Many of the products that pollan had mentioned I’ve have tried or eat, never thought about eatting something that wasn't so processed. For instance like cereals, protein water, and go-gurts, go-gurts are something that are always around my nephew makes me think twice about buying it for him. If our generation is taught to eat nothing but processed food what can we teach our children and our children’s children when we grow older, being more aware of the problem now and help us change our life style of eating.
When walking into a super market we usually already  know what we are going to buy, which I'm sure are the wrong things to eat. The author Michael pollan suggested we walk around the perimeter of the super market for the less processed foods “Most supermarkets are laid out the same way: processed foods in the center, fresh food on the walls.” that is a fantastic suggestion you never really think about how a super market is set up. The only difficult part about being able to shop in super market is actually taking your time to read what is on the labels and knowing if it’s bad for you or not, I live such a fast paced life it’s hard to take your time to read labels.

BLOG 11::CATW # 4

In “let them eat fat”, Critser discusses Fast-food and National restaurants are targeting poor-inner-city communities .  It was the poor communities that empowered the development of so many fast food restaurants, by the need of cheap meals. Not to mention that fast-food places offer super-size for meals that are with a large caloric content. The amount of calories consumptions made in one meal is the amount of calories that are almost consumed in a day on a normal diet. These restaurants are place where African Americans and Latin Americans live.
The most interesting idea of this article is that the fast food industry likes to target poor-inner-city communities like African Americans and Latin Americans because of large calorie consumptions, cheaper meals due to lack of money and time. Critser said “One of every four hamburgers sold by the good folks of McDonalds, for example, is now purchased by inner-city consumers who, disproportionately, are young black men.” Living in NYC has shown me that fast food places are common, just in my area in queens there are three McDonalds, two Burger Kings, One Wendy’s, four subways, and two taco bells. That’s just in one area of New York. I can only imagine how many more Fast food restaurants there are in New York alone.
Large calorie consumptions are made all the time especially when so many cheap fast food restaurants are made.  When going into McDonalds, For example, the meals vary from 680 calories to 1,340 calories or more.  Meals offered in McDonalds such as Chicken Nuggets in which most people believe is healthier than a burger and truth would be it’s not, Big Macs, Angus Burgers, ETC. these are all meals that contain too many calories for one person to eat every day. Critser had mentioned “according to the very generous U.S. dietary guidelines, 1,340 calories represent more than half of a teenager’s recommended daily consumption”. There are many High school and college students that go to fast food restaurants like McDonalds to get a snack that contain a large amount of calories, this is why a large percentage of our society remains over weight.
Although these Fast-food restaurants are very unhealthy many Americans don’t have time or money to be able to have a sit-down dinner. Especially in poor-inner-city communities that work harder than the white man. African Americans and Latino Americans are in areas where fast food restaurants are right around the corner. I live in an area where a lot of Latin men stand outside waiting for a job to come a long, so when they get hungry they have a place like Dunken donuts or McDonalds, ETC. to get a quick cheap meal. That goes for many Americans with no time, whether it’s because of work or schools maybe even both. Our poor communities are being served with the bad end of the stick, our health’s are always at risk because of the food we eat, and to save a quick buck or even to save some time.

In where the whale be at?: The place of race & racism in the discussion of environmentalism, Terry J.cole questions so why should people of color be concerned about the environment? He begins to explain that people of color have a historic bond with the environment.People of color dont have the opportunity to access healthy food. African Americans and even latino Americans live in toxic waste areas that can cause severe health issues, and the lack good medical attention doesn't help their situation. . More white people are living in more spatiouse areas that contain more park space than people of color. I never realized that our communities where so much more down greated than white people becasue i read this essay it opens up my eyes to see less healthy food products, poor meddical attention, lack or space and good environment around us.

Summary of The Meatrix

In the Short film "what is the Meatrix", they explain how family farms are disappearing rapidly because of  factory farming and how horrific the environment of factory farming really is. Family farms were created to maximize profits by agriculture corporations but what they didn't realize is that it can cause great danger to humans and animals. Animals in the farm are packed closely together, and live in horrific and dangerous environments. The conditions these animals live in can cause them to fight and spread deceases within one another. The corporation determined that they would fix the problem with animal mutilation. Because of poor conditions in these farms the deceases these animals contract can get passed to humans. I never realized that the story we tell ourselves about where meat comes from is not much of what really is happening because of Animal cruelty, antibiotic resistant germs, massive pollution, and destroyed communities.

In the short film "the Meatrix: Revolting" they are explaining that the illusion that we have of the dairy farms is nothing like it is now also known as dairy factories not farms. Cows are placed in confined spaces that only allow them to be moved to a milking stations and they also live in fesses infested areas. RGBH is an artificial hormone that provides growth that is being injected into the cows to produce more milk. When born, the calves are separated from their mothers at birth. They're being feed milk re-placer that is made in part from cows blood. This is how mad cow disease can be spread. After seeing this film, i think people should really take into consideration the way the milk is produced because of animal cruelty, antibiotic overuse, and artificial hormones.

In the short film " The Meatrix II 1/2" they are explaining How poor the conditions in the meat factory can be especially working in the factory. A meat factory can process up to five thousand cows in a single day. Meat packing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the nation, due to the speed of production it can cause the workers to get injured. The reason for the speed is because of major profits they make for faster deliveries. In the slaughter house due fast production, can cause manure to get everywhere including the meat because of leaking intestines, which causes e-coli. I never realized how dangerouse these conditions can because of dangerous working conditions and manure in the meat.

Response:

The tour of the farm shows and explains the conditions and harm that factory farming can do.

In the article the cyborg advantage in wired magazine, Clive Thompson explains that there will never be a clear answer on when humans will be seeking machine intelligence into their personal lives because everyone is different. "It's a personal quest". Grandmasters of chess relied on many years of experience especially strategy and intuition to get that perfect move. Until kasparov created an online advanced chess that changed the game, by creating our world with machines. These days we debate how modern our world is becoming because of the things like virtual chess, online thinking and socializing.
Virtual chess became an introduction to many other online games. Chess is an example to show that people are thrilled by personal technology. At one point in time chess was played with only intelligence and strategy. Only technology has given the opportunity to have an entrant, a virtual partner. As quoted “The ones who have optimized their process- they know how and when to rely on machine intelligence.
Intelligence have gone into another level, you can either use it or abuse it. Online thinking has evolved into Google look up’s, Dictionary.com, Bing, etc... We can use these sites to gather information about just about anything we want to know. The use of these websites is to gain information. Many individuals abuse their own mind by cheating, instead of absorbing the information we copy and paste the information to the document.” We’re sure to depend increasingly on digital assistance for thinking and socializing, and each new technology will extend our reach while threatening to swallow even more of our attention”.  Socializing became a cyborg activity that happens day in day out. Facebook is a major influence on people ages 13-38 at least, it’s harder to call someone and talk about your day than just going online and creating a whole virtual conversation. As said in the article “…we rely on facebook or twitter to tell us about people we’re interested in…” It’s called the social network. I personally us it, but when I don’t I feel awkward. It’s strange how we depend on virtual relationships to keep things interesting.

Steroids

Steroids come in tablet or liquid form, and they are illegal in the United States. Many people who use steroids buy them from overseas sources with no guarantees of quality or purity. In some cases, teens are shooting steroids into their bodies, not knowing that the product is intended for veterinary use or is adulterated. Anabolic steroids are compounds which are closely related to the male hormone testosterone. This kind of steroid builds muscle mass. Androgenic steroids increase the male characteristics in users. I choose this because men and women are artifically creating muscles .

Artifact 4

Student loans

A student loan is designed to help students pay for college tuition, books, and living expenses. It differs from other types of loans in that the interest rate is substantially lower and the repayment schedule is deferred while the student is still in school. Most students dont know how bad the dept can get after school if they dont pay it off right away. Interest rates start rising and your dept get higher. I choose this artifact because it shows that attending school for a high education can come with a price.

In medicine, a prosthesis, prosthetic, or prosthetic limb is an artificial device extension that replaces a missing body part. It is part of the field of biomechatronics, the science of using mechanical devices with human muscle, skeleton, and nervous systems to assist or enhance motor control lost by trauma, disease, or defect. Prostheses are typically used to replace parts lost by injury (traumatic) or missing from birth (congenital) or to supplement defective body parts.  I choose this artificial leg because it shows how much more we can regain our lives over someone Else's invention. Prosthetic legs have helped a lot of people who are burdened of having just one leg for the rest of their lives.  These have been designed according to our understanding on the human anatomy and leg movement.
Pacemaker

A pacemaker (or artificial pacemaker, so as not to be confused with the heart's natural pacemaker) is a medical device which uses electrical impulses, delivered by electrodes contacting the heart muscles, to regulate the beating of the heart. The primary purpose of a pacemaker is to maintain an adequate heart rate, either because the heart's native pacemaker is not fast enough, or there is a block in the heart's electrical conduction system. Modern pacemakers are externally programmable and allow the cardiologist to select the optimum pacing modes for individual patients. Some combine a pacemaker and defibrillator in a single implantable device. Others have multiple electrodes stimulating differing positions within the heart to improve synchronisation of the lower chambers of the heart. I choose a pacemaker because it artificially helps your heart pump and i have personally seen it in action. My father had a pace maker and he was alive longer than he was suppose to be. I'm thankful for the creation of pacemaker for giving me the chance to spend a little more time with him.

In Vitro Fertilization

in vitro fertilization , technique for conception of a human embryo outside the mother's body. Several ova , or eggs, are removed from the mother's body and placed in special laboratory culture dishes (Petri dishes); sperm from the father are then added, or in many cases a sperm is injected directly into an ovum, a process known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection. If fertilization is successful, a fertilized ovum (or several fertilized ova), after undergoing several cell divisions, is either transferred to the mother's or a surrogate mother's body for normal development in the uterus, or frozen for later implantation. Eggs also can be frozen and fertilized later. In vitro maturation is when the ova are extracted and then matured in a laboratory (instead of in the mother's body) before they are fertilized. I choose this picture to show that children are created other than in an old fashioned way by intimacy. The purpose to in vitro fertilization is to artificially create a child when a women is unable to produce a child on her own.

I Am A Cyborg

Considering all the definitions I have seen based on Cyborg I think this one is the most accurate one; A Cyborg is a human being whose body has been taken over in whole or in part by electromechanical devices; "a cyborg is a cybernetic organism". In our new modern world we are all cyborgs from the time we wake up through the time we go to sleep, we all use some sort of technology to make our live easier to function.  I consider myself a cyborg because I’m addicted to technology, using everyday appliances, watching TV with all the introductions to new electronics and devices,as well as thinking and socializing on the web.

We all use everyday electronics from coffee makers to escalators

My Place in the Cave part 2

Summary of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”
In Plato's " Allegory of the Cave", Socrates explains to Glaucon that humans are unenlightened and that those that want to be enlightened have a hard, long road ahead of them.  As quoted in the passage "nature is enlightened or unenlightened". What happens when a prisoner is released into a world that is unknown to them?.  Facing  the truth becomes an  uncomfortable and frightening process. Many individuals can run back to their old routine and others can feed off of being in a prison-house and prefer to be enlightened.  Those ex-prisoners enlightened by the truth are overwhelmed with excitement with all the new visions they see. It can become a difficult situation to get a grasp, when wisdom is knowing what you don't know. Provoked to share these new understanding on life, the prisoner becomes aware its hard to translate what they can not see on their own. Those that are not enlightened seem oblivious to what is being said and might refer to you as extraordinary but dangerous.

My Place in the Cave

Socrates story reminded me that I am almost out of the cave because i still have to consider what classes to take to finish my major and envision where i am going after school is done. I am reminded of being in a "cave" chained to what i only know; people who do not want to learn new things remind me of the prisoners in the passage who knew nothing more than images reflected by fire, these chains represent complement and unwillingness to learn.  I started a new experience and can felicitate myself on this change. I am now looking at a new day with bright light, standing in this new light reminds me of just seeing the sun for the first time, this glisten blinds me. By not following through with my education I was chained by ignorance, I lived in a “Cave” as if I was facing in only one direction and couldn't move. I’ve personally made the effort to enter school with a brighter thought in my mind and convinced myself after so many false attempts, that this is it, I am ready for this new world. I am willing to prove myself and to step forward into a new light so I can teach others what I have learned and what my experiences will be over the period of my success. After all, when I remember my old habitation I can't see myself going back into the "cave" I once came out of. Now that i have been released from my shackles it is time to explore and make correct choices. I have choose to finish school with a fashion merchandising degree, it's the process of knowing what classes i have to take to get there. I have started off with a Liberal Arts major in order to bring up my grades and take some classes that can be accepted to F.I.T the school I am actually interested in to attend.

Some people choose to remain as prisoners of their own world by ignoring those who want to en-light them with knowledge and choose to remain this way and ignore the opportunities to better themselves. These people are symbolized in the passage by the released prisoner  who had the chance to see light and went back to share his new knowledge with his pals but they could not understand him because they ignored reality. Socrates said “My opinion is that in the world of knowledge the idea of good appears last of all, and is seen only with an effort". How would we know what this world has to offer if we don’t  give ourselves the chance to learn new things?  I was once told “Knowledge is knowing what you don’t know” I want to experience what the "cave" cannot offer. I plan on exploring an entire new world after i am done with school, figuring out what i want to do with the major i am going to accomplish. I have a few ideas along the line of what type of job i would like but my ideas can change with time. I am willing to be open-minded and explore many opportunities when i start attending F.I.T .

The similarities and differences between Truman’s life in Seahaven and reality TV shows

Reality TV has become an open humiliation for those selling their fame.  The persona created for these characters are based on production of reality TV shows and made only to entertain the millions of people watching. Truman lived his whole life in a studio "Seahaven" without knowing he was even part of a national series. Reality TV is nothing more than a multi-billion dollar industry, and is willing to involve who ever will or will not join to enter production.
Comparing the similarities to reality TV and "The Truman Show" doesn't involve too much thinking from what we normally see. Truman was a child star just like so many other children in the industry that didn't have the opportunity to make a decision on their own. For instance Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were child stars since they were babies on the sitcom called "Full house" or even Raven Symone was a child star in the "Cosby show", the list can go on, not much of an option can be made when you can't even talk. Giving them a life within a studio only allows them to know what they see. These child stars live in ignorance and don't know what it feels to be a part of a normal society. Truman lived in what he thought was a normal world and then found out it was nothing more than just a lie.
Reality TV now is more of selling your personality for fame, giving yourself up for the whole world to see you react or act like fools. Such as shows like "Teen mom”, "Jersey Shore", and "Survivor" just to name a few, all involve conflicting personalities and they're real life as they know it only difference is that they are nationwide. The TV directors always make this mix of different people, just to make the show interesting. Just like the director on "The Truman show" he created scenes for Truman to live a traumatic life so he wouldn't try to leave the studio. Truman lived everyday under a camera and one day realized he had the opportunity to leave. These people on reality TV shows are given the opportunity to join under their own will, unlike Truman and many other child stars that don’t. The difference is Truman did not choose to be in the show he was adopted specifically to be on the show, on this show about his life. These reality TV stars nowadays have all chosen to be a part of an entertainment for millions of people to watch. We all should be given the opportunity to be who we want to be not what our parents/ adopted parents or society wants us to become.

" My Place in the cave"

In Plato's " Allegory of the Cave", Socrates explains how we live in a world of reflected ignorance. As said in the passage "nature is enlightened or unenlightened". When we decide to face the truth the process becomes uncomfortable and frightening, many people run back to their old routine. Once you have understood the truth, sharing your new understanding becomes your first instinct. Those that don't know your new knowledge seem inconprehensive and might refer to you as dangerous.
Living in ignorance reminds me of being in a "cave" chained to what you only know; people who do not want to learn new things remind me of the prisoners in the passage who knew nothing more than images reflected by fire, these chains represent complacement and unwillingeness to learn. Personally I am coming out of the “cave”, I started a new experience and can felicitate myself on this change.

Some people choose to remain as prisoners of their own world by ignoring those who want to enlight them with knowledge and choose to remain this way and ignore the oportunities to better themselves.

Pros and Cons to Advertisement

According to the author advertisements are toxic, like pollution. I have a different opinion. There are always pros and cons about advertisement. Being able to know what a business does for you or even to attend it's premises requires a company to advertise a business. In the passage it stated " Everyday an estimate 12 billion displays ads, 3 million radio commercials, and more than 200,000 TV commercials are dumped into north America's collective unconscious". Without these ads, radio commercials, and TV commercials how do you know where to go? or What they have to offer?. For instance I need a good deal on a car, How would i look for one with out advertisement?. If the author meant that we might have the opportunity to know our neighborhood well enough to just explore and find one instead of depending on advertisement all the time, then i would say he's wrong. Cities such as New York has so many businesses that its easy to fall into a trap.Advertisements help us move around better and help us decide on a better opportunity with a great company.
However advertisement has it's definite cons. Displaying many different businesses causes false advertisements, scams, and unaware regret. As said " Anywhere your eyes can possibly come to rest is now a place that in corporate Americas view, can and ought to be filled with a logo or product message." A tighter system for advertisement should be made, if everywhere i lay my eyes i run into an ad, what makes me believe it's a safe product. Large companies such as Nissan, Honda, Toyota, etc. are known, which makes it a lot easier to believe in their Advertisements. When a person becomes unaware to a legitimate advertisement that's when it can become extremely unsafe to either the seller or the buyer. In the same way I'm looking for a great deal on a car, a cheap price can lead me to a scam. For instance I see a great deal on a car online went to purchase it from the dealer but instead got robbed for my money and ended up in a completely unfortunate situation. That's the reality everywhere you turn there might be un-honest person. We all need advertisements at the end of the day, it's just knowing how to choose the right one.
